Observances

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Because breast cancer does not discriminate, affecting both men and women, we encourage everyone to get annual check-ups.  Women, please get your mammogram as scheduled.

October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Dyslexia Awareness Month, and Positive Attitude Month.

National Bullying Prevention Month occurs in October.  This year’s theme is, “The End of Bullying Begins with Me.” Please wear orange on October 21, 2015 for Unity Day.

October 11, 2015 is Pastor Appreciation Day, so take a moment to celebrate your pastor, the person charged with leading the flock and watching for your soul.

Activities

October 17-18, the Baltimore Zoo is hosting Where the Wild Things Snore Sleepover.  Participants tour the zoo, visit natural habitats, listen to camp light stories and songs, receive dinner, continental breakfast, play games, and engage in other activities.  The deadline to register is October 9, 2015.  For more info, go to www.marylandzoo.org

Until October 30, you can take advantage of a helicopter tour.  Tours are private and priced per flight, not per person and can accommodate three people.  For more info, contact Monumental Helicopters at (410)491-4354.

Until October 31, you can participate in FREE yoga classes at Center Plaza.  Every Saturday morning, instructors from Brick Bodies teach yoga outdoors for one hour from 10-11 a.m.  Remember to bring your mat and water.  For more info, go to  https://twitter.com/DTBaltEvents

You have until December 20 to take advantage of the fresh produce, food, flowers, entertainment, jewelry, etc. at the Farmers Market located under the Jones Falls Expressway.  Admission is FREE. For more info, go to www.promotionandarts.org

Employment

The Baltimore City Fire Department is accepting applications for the entry level position of EMT/Firefighter.  The deadline to apply is October 9, 2015.  For more info, go to www.baltimorecity.gov

The Cow Palace at the Timonium Fairgrounds is hosting a job fair for everyone, including mature workers, persons age 50 and older, veterans, and people who are starting over.  Admission is FREE.  Remember to bring several copies of your resume and dress professionally.  This event takes place on October 28-29 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.  For more information, go to www.seniorexpoonline.com

Scholarships

Friends School of Baltimore is offering full scholarships to students who will be age 4 by 9/1/16.  Qualified applicants must meet certain criteria.  Scholarships will cover the costs of tuition and some additional expenses.  Once awarded, recipients will maintain the scholarships as long as the students are at Friends.  Deadline to apply is December 1, 2015 and deciding officials will only consider the first 50 applicants.   For more details, go to www.friendsbalt.org or contact admissions office personnel at (410)649-3211.
